And thanks to their generous product donations, our kids will get to see what it really feels like to swim like a fish! … or a frog.
Science through SCUBA
This morning I walked into the Cressi USA Headquarters in Westwood, New Jersey. I walked out with 5 sets of fins, 5 snorkels, and 6 masks.
On behalf of the entire Schooba Academy staff, I would like to extend my deepest thank you’s to Cressi for their generous donations which will help make this pilot a smashing success.
Check ’em out in the partner’s page.
…Ok, so that was corny, but it’s true!! And I couldn’t be more excited. The Schooba Academy has officially partnered with K586 – Lyons Community School, a title-1 NYC public school in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn serving students grades 6-12. They will be our pool for the pilot (pun intended) which has been set to launch January 15. So, it seems my next step is to secure equipment and facilities. Check out the updated one pager that I’ll be presenting to dive shops to try and get some donations. (You can’t see it here, but there are dual Schooba and Lyons logos on the letterhead. It looks pretty awesome if I do say so myself.)
The Schooba Academy
Teaching Science through SCUBA
Who we are:
The Schooba Academy has designed a curriculum that teaches standards-based middle and high school science through the PADI Scuba Diver training.
Why we work:
It is The Schooba Academy’s mission to foster a sustained engagement in science for students from low-income communities through the learning of SCUBA diving.
What will happen:
A student that completes our program will become a student that sees science as an interesting and worthwhile investment. Outcomes over time will be:
Who we work with:
The Schooba Academy has partnered with K586 – Lyons Community School, a title-1 NYC public school serving students grades 6-12.
We are looking to run 2 pilot courses beginning January 15, 2010 and serving 10 students. The curriculum will connect the PADI Scuba Diver training to 5 NYS Intermediate Level Science Core Curriculum Major Understandings.
To complete this pilot, we are asking for donations of products, donations of money, and support in raising awareness. Our budget is $3,500, and we still need donations of money, PADI Open Water Diver Manuals, the PADI Open Water Diver Video, SCUBA equipment, and a pool to train in. In return, a Partnership will provide retailers with:
From the business plan. Any other ideas?
Approximately 10% of The Schooba Academy’s annual revenue will be generated through Earned Income, i.e. a combination of fees, referrals, retail sales, advertising, and related activities. Mentors will be asked to pay a minimal fee for the training. Likewise, students will be asked to raise a minimal fee for the training. The Schooba Academy will be granted a commission on referrals for equipment and other scuba diving related activities that its participants engage in.
The remainder of our funding will be generated through the following activities:
o Institutional Philanthropy from Foundations: The Schooba Academy will pursue the obtainment of grants from relevant foundations.
o Institutional Philanthropy from Corporations and Small Businesses: In exchange for financial support, The Schooba Academy will offer an individualized sponsorship agreement aimed to ensure the mutual benefit and happiness of both parties. Some of the provisions for sponsorship are exclusive sponsorship in their industry or market, the option to decorate the chosen sponsorship area with suitable company materials, positive PR in all printed materials and special programming, and the opportunity to participate in an educational and enjoyable project of social value.
o In-Kind Donations and/or Partnerships: The Schooba Academy will pursue in-kind donations and/or partnerships with retailers and/or organizations that offer materials, supplies, and/or services that we will need. Some possible retailers/organizations are dive shops, pools, and schools, among others. The Schooba Academy will offer an individualized partnership agreement aimed to ensure mutual benefit and happiness. Some of the provisions for a partnership are exclusivity in their industry or market, the option to decorate the chosen partnership area with suitable company materials, positive PR in all printed materials and special programming, and the opportunity to participate in an educational and enjoyable project of social value.
o Individual Gifts: The Schooba Academy will solicit donations from individuals. This can happen in an unstructured setting, e.g. asking a mentor if he would like to donate to The Schooba Academy after his course; or, this can happen in a structured setting, e.g. when Schooba Academy Alumni dress up in SCUBA gear and raise awareness in a high traffic environment.
It seems that monumental occasions are the theme this week. First, it was the signing of our first official document. Then, the genesis of a Facebook fan page. And now, The Schooba Academy is pleased to announce its first investor! BJR, with the passion of Phil Davison, we assert that we will not let you down.
