Expenses Summary

From the business plan.  Please keep in mind that these are very rough estimates.  Anything seem to be missing?

Expenses

Due to the direct service nature of the program, the majority of The Schooba Academy’s expenses for the first year are payroll expenses (approximately 60%).

The following table outlines the annual expenses The Schooba Academy will need in order to operate for the year of 2011.

Annual Expenses FY 2011
Payroll $33,600
Marketing/Promotion $1,200
Rent $12,000
Utilities $1,200
Insurance $6,000
Other $2,400
————
Total Operating Expenses $56,400

Break-even Analysis

According to these estimates, if The Schooba Academy is to break even, it will need to generate a monthly revenue of $4,700.  The Schooba Academy plans to generate approximately 10% of its operating expenses from its Earned Income.  Consequently, using a conservative 8% ($376), The Schooba Academy will need to secure $4,324 a month from Government/Public Funding, Private Giving, and Fundraising Events.

Fundraising Strategy

From the business plan.  Any other ideas?

Fundraising Strategy

Approximately 10% of The Schooba Academy’s annual revenue will be generated through Earned Income, i.e. a combination of fees, referrals, retail sales, advertising, and related activities.  Mentors will be asked to pay a minimal fee for the training.  Likewise, students will be asked to raise a minimal fee for the training.  The Schooba Academy will be granted a commission on referrals for equipment and other scuba diving related activities that its participants engage in.

The remainder of our funding will be generated through the following activities:

  • Government/Public Funding: The Schooba Academy will pursue the obtainment of government funding.
  • Private Giving:

o    Institutional Philanthropy from Foundations: The Schooba Academy will pursue the obtainment of grants from relevant foundations.

o    Institutional Philanthropy from Corporations and Small Businesses: In exchange for financial support, The Schooba Academy will offer an individualized sponsorship agreement aimed to ensure the mutual benefit and happiness of both parties.  Some of the provisions for sponsorship are exclusive sponsorship in their industry or market, the option to decorate the chosen sponsorship area with suitable company materials, positive PR in all printed materials and special programming, and the opportunity to participate in an educational and enjoyable project of social value.

o    In-Kind Donations and/or Partnerships: The Schooba Academy will pursue in-kind donations and/or partnerships with retailers and/or organizations that offer materials, supplies, and/or services that we will need.  Some possible retailers/organizations are dive shops, pools, and schools, among others.  The Schooba Academy will offer an individualized partnership agreement aimed to ensure mutual benefit and happiness.  Some of the provisions for a partnership are exclusivity in their industry or market, the option to decorate the chosen partnership area with suitable company materials, positive PR in all printed materials and special programming, and the opportunity to participate in an educational and enjoyable project of social value.

o    Individual Gifts: The Schooba Academy will solicit donations from individuals.  This can happen in an unstructured setting, e.g. asking a mentor if he would like to donate to The Schooba Academy after his course; or, this can happen in a structured setting, e.g. when Schooba Academy Alumni dress up in SCUBA gear and raise awareness in a high traffic environment.

  • Fundraising Events: These can include promotional offerings of introductory Discover Scuba Diving courses, community benefits with public speakers, and school based functions, i.e. bake sales, etc., among others.

Executive Summary, Mission, Objectives

Yes, it has been a while, I know.  But before you smash my favorite ukulele and storm out in a fit, please, hear me out!!  …Where was I?  I was … I was … I was … writing my business plan!

And what a plan it is!  Much has changed since we spoke last, and I can’t wait to tell you all about it.  If you have any interest in seeing the first draft of the business plan in its entirety, please just email me (zach@schooba.org), and I will send a copy your way.  Otherwise, I’ll be posting parts of the plan through the next week or so, so stay tuned! Also, check out the ‘About Schooba’  section of the blog as it has been updated, as well.

Please be advised that this is only the first draft, and that what you’re reading is not only open to change, but likely to.

Executive Summary

The Schooba Academy is a soon to be 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission of fostering a sustained engagement in science for students from low-income communities through having them learn how to SCUBA dive.  We believe that a knowledge of science empowers people to be critical and conscious citizens, and that an authentic, long-term engagement is the best foundation for this knowledge.  Unfortunately, students from low-income communities continue to lack skills and interest in the sciences when compared to their more wealthy peers.

At The Schooba Academy, students from low-income communities are paired with a screened and qualified mentor, and together they complete the PADI Open Water Scuba Diver training course.  Throughout the training process the student receives xx number of hours of 1:1 tutoring from their mentor on xx number of NYS Intermediate Level Science Core Curriculum Major Understandings.

The Schooba Academy fosters engagement by creating an experience where students are both learning and having fun.  The use of SCUBA diving as an engaging, relevant, and experiential vehicle for the learning of science, and the providing of 1:1 tutoring ensure this is the case.

All of the start-up expenses for the program have been covered by an investment of $20,000 by Zach Rome.  The Schooba Academy is planning for its inaugural class in September, 2011, where it will operate at an estimated budget of $4,700 per month.  Approximately 10% of this will be generated through Earned Income of the program.  The remainder ( $4,324) will need to be secured through Government/Public Funding, Private Giving, and Fundraising Events.

For at least the first year of operation, The Schooba Academy will serve only students from NYC.

Mission

The Schooba Academy works to foster a sustained engagement in science for students from low-income communities through learning how to SCUBA dive.

Objectives

The Schooba Academy’s objectives during the first year of operation are:

  • To teach xx number of NYS Intermediate Level Science Core Curriculum Major Understandings through the use of SCUBA diving
  • To provide each student with xx hours of 1:1 science tutoring with a qualified mentor
  • For 80% of tutored students to pass the PADI Open Water Scuba Diver Final Exam
  • For 80% of tutored students to sustain an interest in science for at least one year
